Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen Freki, Relic-Sniffing Direwolf

Freki is a massive direwolf who lives in Norgan and has a nose for relics. Capcom first described this character in the Relic Expedition gameplay walkthrough: after a scripted early-story beat, Freki can be fed meat to send the wolf after buried relics in the frozen wastes. Follow Freki, dig up what it finds, and carry the spoils back to Jiera for appraisal. That makes the wolf a free, repeatable sniffer tool — and the reason you keep a pocket full of meat even after the story quest that introduces the pair ends.

Preview coverage describes Freki as a permanent fixture of the relic loop rather than a one-time fetch. The scripted introduction teaches the mechanic; after that, the wolf stays available for as long as you are in Norgan. Kinoshita has said the relic cycle is designed to be a north-only repeat, and Freki is part of that repeat — you do not unlock the wolf and then ignore it.

How Freki works

1. Complete the early Norgan story beat that pairs you with Freki. This is a mandatory quest step, not an optional side task.
2. After the scripted intro, find Freki in the Norgandian Settlement area or in the field.
3. Give the wolf meat. The August title update added an option to prevent camp-cooking meat from being consumed via item shortcuts — turn that on so you can keep a meat stack for Freki separate from your dinner supply.
4. Follow Freki as it tracks a buried relic.
5. Pick up what the wolf digs. Carry it to Jiera for appraisal.

Freki is not a fourth pawn slot. It cannot fight alongside your party. It does not take Rift Crystal fees. It is a north-exclusive tool that exists to supplement monster drops and exploration loot in the relic layer.

Freki and the larger loop

The Relic Expedition Cycle has three sources of unidentified spoils: monsters, exploration (chests, ruins, corners), and Freki. The wolf fills the gap that exploration can miss — buried items that leave no visual trace on the surface. That makes Freki particularly useful for players who want to maximise every Norgan run without spending RC on a hire who cannot fight.

Rift Crystals still hire pawns. RC still pays for Jiera’s appraisals. Freki competes with neither budget. The wolf is pure upside after the introductory quest, provided you feed it.

What Freki finds

Preview coverage and the Relic Expedition overview do not specify whether Freki finds higher-tier relics on average or whether the wolf is a equal random roll alongside exploration. Treat it as another random source in the pool: the wolf finds buried items, not guaranteed gold-tier drops. The same rarity rules that apply to monster spoils likely apply to Freki’s digs.

Relationship to the story

Freki is a named character in the same sense as a landmark — the wolf appears in preview footage as part of the Norgan landscape, and the Relic Expedition description mentions Freki specifically as a guide to buried spoils. The scripted beat that first pairs you with the wolf is part of the Forsaken Dominion story, but the wolf’s mechanical role (relic sniffing) continues after that beat ends.

The name Freki is shared with the wolf from Norse mythology, who accompanies the god Odin. That connection is probably intentional given Norgan’s northern fantasy setting, but Capcom has not made that reference explicit in published materials.
