Best gear for every vocation and how to upgrade it.

Equipment Guide

Equipment in Dragon’s Dogma 2 determines your damage output, defense, and combat effectiveness. Weapons are vocation-specific — Fighters use swords and shields, Archers use bows, and so on. The only exception is Warfarer, which can equip any weapon type. Armor covers the Arisen and pawns, providing defensive stats and sometimes passive bonuses.

This page covers the best weapons and armor in each category, how to upgrade equipment through blacksmiths, and how the relic system in Dark Arisen changes your loadout options. For vocation-specific builds, see Vocations. For relic hunting in Norgan, see Relics.

Weapon types and vocations

Each vocation in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is tied to specific weapon types:

  • Fighter — Swords, Maces, and Shields. Balanced defensive combat with crowd control.
  • Archer — Bows. Ranged damage with knockdown capabilities.
  • Thief — Daggers. Fast attacks and best climbing damage on large monsters.
  • Mage — Staves. Healing, enchantments, and elemental magic.
  • Warrior — Greatswords and Hammers. Heavy commitment damage with massive hits.
  • Sorcerer — Archistaves. High-magick damage with long cast times.
  • Magick Archer — Magickal Bows. Hybrid physical-magical ranged combat.
  • Mystic Spearhand — Duospear. Dash-and-punish melee with magickal attacks.
  • Trickster — Censers. Illusions and pawn manipulation.
  • Warfarer — All weapon types. Flexibility at the cost of lower base stats.

Best weapons by vocation

Fighter

The Silver Rapier (118 Strength, 8,500 Gold) is an excellent early-game sword with high physical damage. For post-game, the Dragon’s Aegis (186 Strength, 40 Wyrmslife Crystals) from the Dragonforged in Bakbattahl is the best shield option. The Dragonforged’s shop at Bay Wayside Shrine north of Bakbattahl offers the strongest weapons in the game.

Dragon’s Dogma (351 Strength, 110 Crystals) is a greatsword option for Fighters who want maximum physical damage. Iron Shield (38 Strength, 1,600 Gold) is the starting shield and remains viable early.

Archer

The Bespoke Bow (112 Strength, 10,500 Gold) is a solid early-game ranged weapon. For late-game, Dragon’s Rancor (308 Strength, 110 Crystals) provides the highest physical damage. Archers should prioritize ranged knockdown skills to control large monsters and keep distance.

Thief

Stilettos (74 Strength, 5,300 Gold) are the early-game dagger choice. Dragon’s Vein (330 Strength, 110 Crystals) becomes the best in slot for pure physical damage. Thieves excel at climbing on large monsters and dealing weak point damage — position is more important than raw damage stats.

Mage

Anchor to Heaven (20 Strength, 115 Magick, 6,200 Gold) provides solid magickal damage with healing capability. Dragon’s Nous (350 Strength, 430 Magick, 110 Crystals) is the post-game staff for maximum magick power. Mages should prioritize magick stats and support capabilities over raw damage.

Warrior

Warriors deal the highest physical damage in the game. Dragon’s Bite (380 Strength, 110 Crystals) is the signature Warrior weapon — it has a unique property where attack power increases as the wielder takes damage. This makes it ideal for aggressive playstyles where you absorb hits while dealing massive counter-damage.

Sorcerer

Dragon’s Wit (126 Strength, 440 Magick, 110 Crystals) is the best archistaff for pure magickal devastation. Sorcerers should build for maximum magick stats and use spells like Seism and Gicel for crowd control against groups.

Magick Archer

Grianmhar (0 Strength, 420 Magick, 110 Crystals) is the best magickal bow. Magick Archers benefit from both physical and magickal stats, making relic bows with hybrid rolls particularly valuable. In Dark Arisen, preview footage showed a relic bow with three skills and a large power jump.

Mystic Spearhand

Lindworm Fang (430 Strength, 405 Magick, 110 Crystals) is the premier duospear. Mystic Spearhand can alternate between physical and magickal attacks, so balanced or magick-focused builds both work.

Trickster

Dragonswail Litany (200 Strength, 325 Magick, 110 Crystals) is the best censer for Tricksters. The Trickster’s playstyle centers on illusion and pawn manipulation rather than raw damage, so support-oriented stats matter more than peak damage.

Warfarer

Warfarers can equip any weapon but receive a 10% stat penalty compared to native vocation users. This means a Warfarer with Dragon’s Bite will deal less damage than a Warrior with the same weapon. Warfarer excels in flexibility — carrying multiple weapon types lets you adapt to any situation. Six skill slots from the August title update make Warfarer more viable by allowing more tool diversity on one bar.

How to upgrade weapons

Weapons can be upgraded up to three times via Blacksmiths throughout the game. The upgrade cost depends on the weapon tier and your current progress. Materials needed include gold and sometimes crafting components found in the world.

Stats improved depend on the smithing style. Some upgrades emphasize raw damage, others add elemental properties or special effects. Check the upgrade preview before confirming.

Blacksmiths are located in:

  • Roderick’s Smithy in Vernworth — Early game
  • Brokkr’s Smithy in Bakbattahl — Mid to late game
  • Dragonforged’s Shop at Bay Wayside Shrine — Post-game (uses Wyrmslife Crystals)

Wyrmslife Crystals

Wyrmslife Crystals are the premium currency for the Dragonforged’s shop. They can be obtained through:

  • Completing quests and defeating certain enemies
  • Selling items at shops
  • Finding them in the world

The Dragonforged’s shop stocks the absolute best weapons in the game. Prioritize saving crystals for your main vocation’s best-in-slot weapon.

Armor and equipment

Armor provides defensive stats and sometimes passive bonuses. Key armor sets include:

Courtly Attire — Obtained from The Ornate Box quest. Required for The Sorcerer’s Appraisal quest and provides elegant appearance for social encounters.

Expeditioner’s Cloak — Reward from Monster Culling. Provides practical bonuses for exploration.

Homespun Cloak — Reward from Brothers Brave and Timid. Basic defensive option.

Ring of Benevolence — Quest reward that provides passive gold or item find bonuses.

Ring of Proximity — From Gift of the Bow. Useful for certain quest requirements.

Ring of Grit — From Readvent of Calamity. Provides combat bonuses.

Dark Arisen relic equipment

Dark Arisen (October 9, 2026) adds a new equipment layer through the relic system. Relic weapons can roll unique or upgraded skills, making them distinct from the fixed-property Lost Rites gear.

Unlike base game weapons that are purchased or found with fixed stats, relic weapons from Norgan have randomized properties. Some relics arrive with custom skills that flash dark-red when used. You appraise unidentified relic spoils at Jiera in the Norgandian Settlement before equipping.

Relic vs Lost Rites gear:

  • Relic weapons — Random properties, can roll unique skills, appraised by Jiera
  • Lost Rites gear — Fixed properties, enhance at blacksmiths, found in the twelve dungeon trials

If you hate RNG, lean on Lost Rites dungeons for your main weapon and treat Norgan relics as jewelry and sidegrades. If you enjoy the lottery, pursue relics aggressively but carry one fixed-piece as a backup.

Equipment for pawns

Pawns can be equipped with weapons and armor. Your main pawn and hired pawns benefit from equipment upgrades just like the Arisen. Check pawn gear regularly — hired pawns often have suboptimal equipment that drags down their effectiveness.

For pawn management, see Pawns. Inclinations, equipment, and vocation all affect pawn performance in combat.

Post-game equipment farming

After completing the main story, the post-game opens up New Game Plus and allows continued farming for better equipment. The Dragonforged’s shop becomes more accessible, and Wyrmslife Crystals can be farmed more efficiently.

For post-game builds, see endgame builds. For a complete progression guide, see the walkthrough.

  5. In Dark Arisen, appraise relics before discarding unidentified spoils
  6. Complete quest chains that reward unique rings and equipment
  7. After October 9, balance relic RNG against Lost Rites fixed gear
