Understanding missable quests
A quest becomes missable when:
- You advance past a specific story point
- You make a specific choice that locks the quest outcome
- A required NPC dies or leaves the area permanently
- You rest at certain inns that progress time-dependent quests
The safest approach is to complete side quests as soon as you encounter them, rather than saving them for later. Check your Adventure Logbook regularly and cross-reference with this list before major story beats.
Every Rose Has Its Thorn
Location: Vernworth
Failure Condition: Complete the quest Nation of the Lambent Flame without finishing this quest chain.
How to Avoid: Complete all of Captain Brant’s quests before leaving Vernworth for Battahl. Captain Brant’s questline includes Monster Culling, Disa’s Plot, The Caged Magistrate, and related quests that must all be completed.
Rewards: 1,200 XP, 8,500 Gold, Ring of Benevolence
Failure Consequence: Wilhelmina goes to jail. The entire quest chain fails and you cannot complete it later.
Quest Details: This is the most commonly missed major quest chain because players rush to Battahl without realizing it locks out content. Captain Brant is located in Vernworth and has multiple quests that must all be completed before departing.
Ordeals of a New Recruit
Location: Borderwatch Outpost
Failure Condition: Leave the Borderwatch Outpost area without completing the quest. Progress past a certain point in the main story without rescuing Phill.
How to Avoid: Talk to Phill at Borderwatch Outpost and complete the quest before leaving the area for Vernworth. Phill is located in the Northern Watch Encampment portion of Borderwatch Outpost.
Rewards: 400 XP, 100 Gold, Lantern Oil
Failure Consequence: Accardo dies. The quest fails and cannot be completed.
Quest Details: This is an early missable that catches players who rush through the opening areas. It is straightforward to complete — talk to Phill, follow the objective, and rescue Accardo.
Prey for the Pack
Location: Checkpoint Rest Town
Failure Condition: Leave the Checkpoint Rest Town area without completing the quest. The quest has a time element where Rodge can die if you do not intervene.
How to Avoid: Visit Morris’s Apothecary at Checkpoint Rest Town and complete the quest before departing. The apothecary is at the center of town.
Rewards: 4,000 XP, 11,000 Gold, Miracle Roborant
Failure Consequence: Rodge dies. The quest fails and cannot be completed.
Quest Details: This quest sends you to deal with wolves attacking a settlement. If you ignore the quest or leave without resolving it, Rodge dies. It is located in the same area as other mid-game content, so it is easy to pass by accidentally.
Shadowed Prayers
Location: Flamebearer Palace, Bakbattahl
Failure Condition: Progress past certain events in Bakbattahl without completing this quest. Nadinia must survive for the quest chain to continue.
How to Avoid: After arriving in Bakbattahl and completing Nation of the Lambent Flame, immediately talk to Menella at Flamebearer Palace to start and complete this quest.
Rewards: 3,500 XP, 18,000 Gold, 5 Jasper
Failure Consequences:
- Nadinia dies
- Quest fails
- Following quests fail: A Candle in the Storm, Crossing in Shadow
- Cannot buy the house in Bakbattahl
Quest Details: This is a significant missable because it gates the house purchase in Bakbattahl and multiple follow-up quests. The house in Bakbattahl provides convenient fast travel and storage access in Battahl.
Till Death Do Us Part
Location: Noble Quarter, Vernworth
Failure Condition: Gregor must survive. If Gregor dies during the quest or before completing it, the quest fails.
How to Avoid: Talk to Margit in the Noble Quarter and complete the quest before advancing the story past Vernworth.
Rewards: 2,800 XP, 5,000 Gold, Steeled Virtue, Lustrous Targe
Failure Consequence: Gregor dies. The quest fails.
Quest Details: This is a story-driven quest in Vernworth’s Noble Quarter. It involves a complicated relationship scenario where your choices affect outcomes. Pay attention to NPC dialogue and intervene if necessary.
The Ailing Arborheart

Failure Condition: Leave the Sacred Arbor area without completing the quest chain.
How to Avoid: Complete The Ailing Arborheart before departing Sacred Arbor. The quest begins after completing A Trial of Archery.
Rewards: 1,600 XP, 0 Gold
Failure Consequence: The quest chain fails and Out of the Forest, Into the Forge cannot be started.
Quest Details: The Sacred Arbor is home to the Elf race. This quest chain involves the giant tree called the Arborheart. It is easy to skip if you do not explore the Elf village thoroughly.
A Trial of Archery
Location: Merchant’s Quarter, Vernworth
Failure Condition: Complete Gift of the Bow, then fail to return for the advanced trial.
How to Avoid: Talk to Glyndwr in the Merchant’s Quarter after completing Gift of the Bow to unlock this follow-up quest.
Rewards: 2,800 XP, 16,000 Gold, Repeller Bow
Quest Details: This quest is less commonly missed because it requires completing Gift of the Bow first. If you complete Gift of the Bow, return to Glyndwr for the advanced challenge.
Out of the Forest, Into the Forge

How to Avoid: After completing Legacy, speak with the relevant NPC to continue the questline.
Rewards: 3,000 XP
Quest Details: This quest continues the Battahl equipment crafting storyline.
General missable prevention strategy
The best strategy to avoid missing quests is:
-
Check your Adventure Logbook regularly — The logbook categorizes quests and shows which are available. Review it before major story transitions.
-
Complete quests as soon as possible — Do not save side quests for later. If you encounter a quest, complete it before moving to the next area.
-
Talk to all NPCs in each area — Some quests only appear after talking to specific NPCs. If an NPC has a dialogue option, explore it.
-
Save before major story beats — Use the multiple save slots from the August title update to create backup saves before major story transitions.
-
Use the Eternal Ferrystone wisely — The Eternal Ferrystone allows unlimited warps, making it easier to return to previous areas to complete missed quests.
Points of no return
Beyond specific quests, certain story moments represent points of no return:
- Leaving Vernworth for Battahl — Triggers the Nation of the Lambent Flame quest and locks Vernworth side quests
- Completing the main story — Returns you to the last inn save with the Unmoored World available
- The Dragon fight — After this, New Game Plus is your only way to replay

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers before the October 9, 2026 launch.
What is the most commonly missed quest in Dragon's Dogma 2?
Every Rose Has Its Thorn is the most commonly missed major quest. Players rush to Battahl without completing Captain Brant's questline in Vernworth, which permanently locks them out of the quest and Wilhelmina's storyline.
Can I restart a missable quest after failing it?
No. Once a missable quest fails, it cannot be completed on that save file. Your only options are to load a previous save or continue without that quest's rewards.
How do I prevent accidentally missing quests?
Complete side quests as soon as you encounter them, check your Adventure Logbook before major story transitions, and use the multiple save slots from the August title update to create backup saves.
Does the Eternal Ferrystone help with missable quests?
Yes. The Eternal Ferrystone makes it easier to warp back to previous areas to complete missed quests before advancing the story. It removes the tedium of walking back to earlier areas.
What happens if I miss Shadowed Prayers?
Missing Shadowed Prayers means Nadinia dies, two follow-up quests fail (A Candle in the Storm and Crossing in Shadow), and you cannot purchase the house in Bakbattahl. This significantly impacts your Battahl experience.
