Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen Pawns and Norgan Party Roles
AI companions, rift hires, Dragonsplague draughts, and snow-ready parties.
Pawns are why Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a party game that stays single-player. You create one main pawn. You hire two more from the rift. All three are AI. Dark Arisen does not change that contract. The expansion launches October 9, 2026 as a single-player campaign: Forsaken Dominion in Norgan, twelve Lost Rites on the base map, and a relic loop that will compete with pawn hiring for the same Rift Crystals. This page is about who stands next to you in the blizzard, not about inviting friends into a raid.
If you need vocation buttons, read Vocations. If you need the mechanical refresh on orders, camping, and travel, read How to Play.
Main pawn
Your main pawn is born in the character creator beside you. They share your level, wear the vocation you assign, and keep the appearance, voice, and inclinations you chose. New hairstyles and tattoos in Dark Arisen apply to them as well as to the Arisen — the third pillar is not Arisen-only fashion. Extra save slots from the August title update are extra Arisen, each with their own main pawn. You cannot duplicate the same pawn across slots, and you cannot keep multiple parallel saves of one Arisen.
Treat the main pawn as the one companion whose kit you will actually maintain. Give them a vocation that covers your holes. A Thief Arisen climbing the Norgan Giant wants a Mage who can respect freeze. A Sorcerer Arisen wants a Fighter or Warrior who will hold a trunk swing. A Trickster Arisen wants damage dealers, not a second censer. Respec them when you respec yourself. Do not leave a 2024 Magick Archer on fire enchantments as your only plan for Fimbl.
Hired pawns and the rift
The two remaining slots are hired. They can be Capcom’s premade AI or other players’ main pawns running locally. That is asynchronous sharing, not multiplayer. You still play alone. You still pause when you want. You still cannot drop into someone else’s Norgan instance.
Hiring costs Rift Crystals. Appraisal at Jiera also costs Rift Crystals. Dark Arisen turns RC into a fork: a fashionable rift hire versus a high-tier spoil. Decide before you click. The August update raised the max items you can gift a pawn on dismiss to 99, which is useful when you need inventory for unidentified relics. It is not a reason to hire a walking mule with no ice resist.
Check three things on every hire: vocation, inclinations, and whether their gear looks like it has ever seen snow. Bad hires wipe Lost Rites rooms faster than a bad relic roll, because a red-glow pack will target the idiot standing in the tell.
Inclinations and orders
Inclinations steer how aggressive, supportive, or curious a pawn is. The four orders — to me, go, wait, help — still override a lot of that if you use them. Title Update 3.2 adds Explore (hold Go) and High Five! (hold To Me), both with on/off toggles. Pawns can now grapple and draw aggro, protect a downed or frozen Arisen, lure packs into the environment, follow up your knockbacks, pull you higher while they cling to a large monster, and take brief invincibility when you revive them. Use the new shouts; do not assume 2024 AI. In Norgan storms, “to me” is how you stop a Mage from walking into wind and freeze breath. In Lost Rites, “wait” is how you stop a Warrior from pulling the next red-glow room while you drink. Trickster players should treat orders as the class mechanic. Everyone else should still bind them.
Preview combat in the north includes avalanches, icicle drops, boulder rolls, and a Giant that freezes you solid. Pawns will chatter about some of that. Listen once. Then give the order anyway. AI that talks about an avalanche is not the same as AI that sidesteps it.
Dragonsplague after the August update
Dragonsplague is the pawn condition that could, at its worst, kill your main pawn’s personality and massacre a town. Capcom spent two years hearing that the tells were unclear and the “cure” was drowning someone you liked. The August title update (Title Update 3.2) adjusts the system in three published ways:
- Benefits of the plague are improved, so an afflicted pawn is a real tactical trade instead of only a time bomb.
- Dragonsbaulk Draught is added as a cure item, with associated pawn conversation.
- You are no longer forced to lose the pawn to clean the save.
That does not make the plague harmless. It makes it a decision. In Norgan you may want the combat spike on a hire you plan to dismiss anyway. On your main pawn, buy the draught, listen to the new dialogue, and cure them before you sleep at the Norgandian Settlement. Do not test a town-wipe on the only inn next to Jiera.
If a guide still tells you to throw every glowing-eyed pawn into the Brine, it is outdated. The full cure-versus-keep trade — legs stuns on large foes, stamina-free hits on small ones, a slower loss gauge — lives on Dragonsplague. Read title updates for the patch language and keep a draught in storage.
Party roles for Norgan
Build around the monsters previews actually named.
- Norgan Giant — climbers (Thief, Fighter) on the body, someone who can act after freeze breath, pawns who will not stand in trunk range. Avalanches can dump everyone; do not run four glass cannons.
- Barbarians — greatswords and longbows. You want a blocker or a Trickster hold, plus an Archer or Magick Archer who can win the bow duel.
- Electric saurians — shock plus water is misery. Leave the lake, break ice on your terms, hire resists.
- Fimbl — ice dragonkin. Heart-and-head logic from every other drake, with winter damage. Mage enchantments and a climber.
- Flying pests — they exist to knock you off the Giant. One pawn with a real anti-air skill is worth more than a second melee twin.
- Relic thieves — something that steals spoils and runs. A pawn who will chase is useful; a pawn who will wander off your relic pile is not.
Freki is a direwolf you feed after a scripted beat so it sniffs buried relics. It is not a fourth pawn slot and it does not take rift RC. Keep meat for the wolf, not for a hire’s snack. Relic economy is on Relics.
Party roles for Lost Rites
Closed rooms, red-glow heads, 30–60 minutes per trial from about level 20. You want burst, peel, and pawns who obey “wait.” A Mage who panics in a doorway wipes a run. A Warrior who overpulls wipes a run. Fixed loot inside does not care about your rift fashion; it cares whether the party can finish the room. Mix relic gear from Norgan into these kits, but hire for the room, not for the screenshot. More dungeon pacing sits on Lost Rites and party comps.
Hiring checklist the week of launch
- Rebuild your main pawn’s vocation and six skills to match your Arisen, not your 2024 nostalgia.
- Put Dragonsbaulk Draught on a hotkey you will remember.
- Budget RC: relics first or hires first, not both on the same evening.
- For Norgan, hire ice sense and a climber. For the first Lost Rites, hire obedience and burst.
- Gift overflow spoils to a dismissable hire (up to 99) so you can walk to Jiera.
- Do not plan around Hard Mode. It is in development for after launch, aimed at level-cap players, and is not confirmed in the October 9 package.
Pawns are still the joke and the joy of this series: three strangers narrating your mistakes while they stab a cyclops in the knee. Dark Arisen asks them to do that in wind, on ice, and in red-glow rooms, with a plague you can finally treat like a status instead of a ghost story. Make the main pawn on purpose. Hire the other two on purpose. Then let them talk. You can always tell them to wait.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers before the October 9, 2026 launch.
Does hiring other players' pawns make this multiplayer?
No. Hired pawns are AI running locally. The campaign is single-player. See How to Play for orders and rift basics.
How did Dragonsplague change?
The August title update added Dragonsbaulk Draught as a cure, pawn dialogue, and improved plague benefits. You are not required to drown a pawn. Notes: title updates.
Should my main pawn match my vocation?
Usually no. Cover a hole: climbers pair with Mages, casters pair with Fighters. Role ideas: party comps and Vocations.
Why am I out of Rift Crystals?
Jiera's relic appraisal uses RC too. Identify high-tier Norgan spoils first and hire fewer luxury pawns.
What party should I take to Norgan?
A climber, an ice answer, and anti-air for flying pests is the safe preview read. Monster list: Norgan.
