Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen Arisen and pawn compositions

Four AI-backed roles for open Norgan hunts and enclosed Lost Rites runs.

Party Comps for Norgan

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen is a single-player expansion. Your party is always you (the Arisen) plus up to three AI pawns. There is no human raid finder and no couch campaign. Hire pawns from the Rift, keep a Main Pawn you actually built, and treat every “comp” on this page as a vocation-plus-role plan, not a multiplayer stack.

The October 9, 2026 expansion asks that party to do two different jobs. Norgan is an open, snowy region recommended around level 40, with relic spoils, blizzards, and large wandering packs. Lost Rites are twelve enclosed Pathfinder dungeons on the base map, open from about level 20, each expected to take 30 to 60 minutes, with fixed loot. A team that farms relics in the north is not automatically the team that should walk into a sealed door in Vermund.

The four roles that actually matter

Forget MMO holy trinity language. Pawns do not tank threat meters. They follow inclinations, your pawn commands, and the vocation you put on their sheet.

  • Frontline. Fighter or Warrior pawn that stays in melee, draws bodies, and gives you space to aim or cast. Fighter is the default because shields still save wipes. Warrior is the pick when the room is a single large target.
  • Support magick. Mage pawn with Anodyne and elemental enchantments. This slot is non-negotiable for almost every first-run plan. You can put Mage on the Arisen instead, but then you owe the party a different damage plan.
  • Flex damage. Archer, Thief, Sorcerer, or Magick Archer pawn that covers the range your Arisen does not. If you are Magick Archer, this flex is often a Warrior. If you are Warrior, this flex is often an Archer.
  • Arisen carry. Whatever you personally play well for two hours. Preview ranks currently favor Magick Archer, Warfarer, and Mystic Spearhand — see vocation ranks — but a confident Fighter beats a confused Warfarer in a blizzard.

Main Pawn identity matters more than a hired pawn’s fashion. Your Main Pawn keeps the hairstyle, tattoos, and inclination you chose in the character creator, and other players can hire that pawn from the Rift even though they never join your session as humans.

Norgan comps (open snow, relics, weather)

Norgan, the Forsaken Dominion, is built for the Relic Expedition Cycle. You kill, you loot unidentified spoils, you walk back so Jiera can appraise them for Rift Crystals, and you go out heavier. Packs include new northern monsters and at least one grotesque dragon-style fight shown in hands-on coverage (a decaying wyrm that vomits corpses). Range, peel, and a way to leave are more important than a perfect dungeon rotation.

Norgan default — Magick Archer Arisen

  • Arisen: Magick Archer (seeker bolts, an elemental detonator, a sustain arrow, Martyr’s Bolt if you can stomach the health tax).
  • Main Pawn: Fighter, Guardian-leaning, shield skills that actually fire.
  • Hired 2: Mage with Anodyne and a boon that matches the bow you are using that day.
  • Hired 3: Warrior or Archer. Warrior if you keep seeing large bodies. Archer if flying pests are eating the Mage.

This is the party that matches the Singular Sanguine Radiance preview. You stay at mid range, the Fighter holds the snow, the Mage keeps you standing, and the fourth pawn covers whatever the weather is punishing.

Norgan melee — Mystic Spearhand or Warrior Arisen

  • Arisen: Mystic Spearhand (keep Mirour Vesture now that six slots exist) or Warrior (counter plus charge plus gap-closer).
  • Main Pawn: Mage. You are in the teeth of the pack; someone has to heal you without being you.
  • Hired 2: Fighter, because two melee Arisen without a shield pawn is how Norgan food chains get a meal.
  • Hired 3: Archer or Magick Archer pawn for the things you cannot jump to.

Norgan Warfarer

Warfarer is a party in a coat. Rearmament plus five other skills let you swap a magickal bow and a duospear in one fight. Still bring a Mage pawn. Warfarer is not a license to skip support; it is a license to skip a second damage vocation on your own bar. A Fighter pawn remains useful because Rearmament does not make you a perfect shield.

What to leave at the inn in Norgan

  • Triple melee with no Mage. Blizzards plus relic-hungry overconfidence will drain health items.
  • Trickster Arisen plus three damage pawns who ignore your illusions. Trickster only works when the pawn line is trained to finish tagged targets.
  • Four ranged vocations. Something will walk into melee and you will drop the relic bag.

Access note: you do not have to finish the entire base campaign to walk north. Talking to Brant at the Vernworth tavern at night is the official early path. Difficulty, not a lock, is why Capcom still points at level 40.

Lost Rites comps (twelve doors, 30–60 minutes, fixed loot)

Lost Rites are Pathfinder trials hidden behind sealed doors the community already mapped on the base-game world. They ramp. Early doors are the level-20 on-ramp. Later doors are the reason you take Norgan relics back south. Loot inside is fixed equipment associated with past Arisen, and that gear can be enhanced like normal weapons. It is not the random relic table.

Because each run is a contained 30-to-60-minute chunk, wipes cost more than they do on an open snow ridge. Build for sustain and for a boss plan, not for a scenic hike.

Lost Rites default — Spearhand or Thief Arisen

  • Arisen: Mystic Spearhand for corridor tempo, or Thief for climb routes and single-target bosses.
  • Main Pawn: Mage with extra curatives in the pack, not just Anodyne.
  • Hired 2: Fighter to hold doorways.
  • Hired 3: Sorcerer if the dungeon is a packed room, Archer if it is a vertical shaft.

Lost Rites siege — Warrior Arisen

Warrior plus Mage plus Fighter plus Magick Archer pawn is the “we are here to break a named body” set. Six Warrior skills finally let you keep a counter and a finisher. This is the party I would take into a later Lost Rite after a Norgan relic greatsword drop, not into the first level-20 door.

Lost Rites Mage Arisen (the stubborn plan)

If you insist on playing Mage, your Main Pawn should be Fighter and your hired pair should be Warrior plus Archer. You become the sustain; they become the clock. This is slower in Norgan and more comfortable in a dungeon that funnels enemies into Levin.

How the two modes feed each other

Kinoshita described the intended loop in plain language: you can bounce. Clear an early Lost Rite, hit a door you are not ready for, travel to Norgan, appraise relics, then return south with better stats. Relic acquisition and appraisal still happen only in Norgan. Do not expect a Lost Rite chest to roll Singular Sanguine Radiance.

That loop is why party comps should be swappable, not sacred. Keep vocation tomes and extra pawn knowledge so you can rebuild at a guild without deleting your Main Pawn’s face. The August save-slot patch lets you keep separate Arisen — not multiple slots of the same hero — if you want a Norgan hunter and a dungeon specialist on one console.

Inclinations and commands, not logos

A Fighter pawn set to a reckless inclination is not a frontline. A Mage pawn told to “Go!” into a blizzard is not support. Before you blame a vocation rank, check:

  1. Inclination (Guardian, Medicant, and so on) matches the role you wrote on this page.
  2. Their equipped skills actually fire in the last fight. Six slots help pawns too.
  3. You are not hiring a level 10 pawn into a level 40 Norgan camp.
  4. Dragonsplague policy is set. The August patch adjusted the plague and added a costly cure path; it did not make infected pawns a joke. Read title updates and the pawn guide before you ignore glowing eyes.

A launch-week checklist

  1. Finish or skip to the point where Brant can send you north, around level 40, with a Mage pawn you trust.
  2. Put your favorite hybrid on the Arisen. If you have no favorite, Magick Archer is the preview-safe pick.
  3. Run one early Lost Rite from level 20 with a shield pawn so you learn the door format before Norgan relics exist.
  4. After you have a relic weapon, rebuild the flex pawn to cover the hole that weapon does not cover.
  5. Ignore any guide that assumes a second human is standing next to you. They are writing a different game.

For the personal class letter grades that sit underneath these four-person plans, stay on vocation ranks. For the gear those plans spend Rift Crystals on, use endgame builds. Story faces that will walk through the same snow — Eir, the Fallen Dragon, and your own Arisen — live on the characters hub.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers before the October 9, 2026 launch.

Can I play Dark Arisen with friends in the same party?

No. The campaign is single-player. Pawns are AI companions, including pawns you hire from other players' Rift data. There is no human four-player questing.

What is the safest first Norgan party?

Magick Archer Arisen, Fighter Main Pawn, Mage hire, and a Warrior or Archer flex. That covers range, a shield, and healing while you learn relic routes around level 40.

Should Lost Rites parties match Norgan parties?

Not always. Lost Rites are 30-to-60-minute enclosed trials with fixed loot and a rising difficulty curve. Lean into sustain, a doorway Fighter, and a boss plan. Open Norgan wants range and a relic bag.

Do I need a Mage pawn?

Almost always on a first run. You can put Mage on the Arisen instead, but then your hired pawns must supply the damage you stopped dealing. Skipping heal magick entirely is how relic trips end at the inn storage chest.

When do I swap comps?

When a Lost Rite door outscales you, go north for relics and return. When Norgan packs keep wiping a melee Arisen, hire more range. Rebuild at a vocation guild rather than forcing one sacred foursome.
