Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen Fighter: Sword, Shield, and Freeze Answers
Sword and board tank in Dark Arisen's icy north — and why the Norgan Giant is the Fighter's fight.
Fighter is a starter vocation in Dragon’s Dogma 2 and a natural pick for the Norgan Giant’s freeze breath. Sword and shield gives you a block, a taunt, and a platform — literally — when you need to climb a tusked enemy in a blizzard. Dark Arisen (October 9, 2026) adds new hair and tattoo options but does not change the Fighter kit. The six skill slots from Title Update 3.2 let the class carry a block, a knockback, a climb assist, and two more tools instead of the cramped four-slot setup that made Fighters feel like they were filling gaps.
This page covers Fighter mechanics, best skills, Norgan preparations, and how to build a Fighter that does not get frozen standing up. Companion pages: vocations for the full class list, vocation ranks for tier context, and party compositions for how a Fighter pawn serves a party.
Vocation overview
Fighter uses swords, maces, and shields. The class is the closest Dragon’s Dogma 2 has to a traditional tank: it draws enemy attention, absorbs physical blows with a raised shield, and creates openings for pawns to deal damage. The climbing mechanic means a Fighter on top of a Giant is a Fighter whose pawns are hitting the weak point below.
Core Fighter traits:
- High physical defence from shield raises and armor.
- Taunt and draw — Fighter skills explicitly pull enemy focus.
- Climbing platform — standing on a large enemy’s body gives pawns a clear shot.
- No inherent magic — cold, fire, and electric resistance must come from gear and pawn support.
Skills and weapon slots
Title Update 3.2 raised the equipped skill cap from four to six. Fighter skills worth carrying:
Shield Sage (core skill) — Raises shield guard angle and reduces chip damage through block. This is not optional. Without it, blocked hits leak stamina. With it, a Fighter can hold a Norgan Giant’s trunk swing without losing positioning.
Burning Blade or Blazing Slip — Fire elemental sword skills that apply a burn. Burning is useful against ice-resistant enemies and as a general damage layer.
Shield Bash — Stuns a target with the shield edge. The knockback interrupts charge attacks and gives pawns a window. Essential in Norgan where barbarian longbowmen will try to pin you while a Giant closes.
Rending Strike — Lowers target defence for a window. Use before a pawn’s big spell or a climbing hit.
Fortitous Spur — Knockback on hit. Keeps melee enemies from pressing into your guard.
One of the six new weapon skills that Capcom added across vocations in TU3.2 — check the full patch notes for the Fighter-specific addition. The exact skill name from the September patch is listed in the official notice on dragonsdogma.com.
The six-slot Fighter bar
At six slots, the intended Fighter bar looks like:
- Shield Sage (core, always equipped).
- Shield Bash (crowd control and interrupt).
- One damage skill (Burning Blade or equivalent).
- One defence skill (Rending Strike or Fortitous Spur).
- One climbing or mobility tool.
- One safety button — a curative, a knockback, or a pawn command buffer.
The two free slots over the 2024 bar mean you no longer have to choose between a knockback and a taunt. Both fit.
Norgan Giant: the Fighter’s signature fight
The Norgan Giant is the reason to bring a Fighter to the snow. It is a tusked, furry humanoid that swings a tree trunk, slams the ground, and breathes ice. The freeze breath is the wipe condition — a frozen Fighter cannot raise a shield.
How a Fighter handles the Giant:
- Approach with shield up. The Giant telegraphs the trunk swing. Block it, then punish the recovery.
- Climb the Giant. Once it is staggered or stationary, climb the torso. The Giant will try to shake you off. Your pawns hit the heart and wings.
- Climbing while frozen is death. If you are already frozen, do not climb — wait for a pawn to break the freeze or use a curative before you go up.
- Bring cold resist gear. A Fighter in ice-resistant armor survives one freeze. A Fighter in standard plate survives none.
- Save a pawn with cold resist. Your Mage or Magick Archer pawn should have ice resist in its loadout. If the pawn freezes, the Giant’s trunk swing will kill it.
The Giant is a field fight, not a Lost Rite. You can rest at the Norgandian Settlement, restock curatives, and try again. Do not treat a first attempt as a final judgment.
Gear and augment priorities
Best weapons:
- Dragon’s Dogma (351 Strength, 110 Crystals) — the best greatsword for Fighter if you want raw physical damage. Not a shield weapon but still Fighter-accessible.
- Dragon’s Aegis (186 Strength, 40 Wyrmslife Crystals) — the best shield from the Dragonforged in Bakbattahl. defence and stability.
- Silver Rapier (118 Strength) — solid early-game sword with high physical damage.
- Iron Shield (38 Strength) — viable starter shield.
Augments: prioritize Strength and Defence. The Fighter augment line rewards taking hits and blocking, so build into it honestly.
Fighter as a pawn
A Fighter pawn hired from the Rift does the same job: draws aggro, holds a shield, climbs large enemies, and creates openings. The difference is that you control the Arisen’s positioning directly, so the Fighter pawn should be given the job you cannot do simultaneously — usually “hold this enemy’s attention while I deal damage from range.”
Inclination priorities for a Fighter pawn:
- Guardian — maintains proximity to the Arisen and intercepts attacks.
- Scather — attacks larger enemies, which is the Giant fight.
- Utilitarian — covers support functions if the party lacks a Mage.
For pawn management and inclination tuning see Pawns. For party composition strategy see party compositions.
How Fighter compares to Warrior
Fighter and Warrior both use greatswords and hammers. The difference:
- Fighter: shield available, defensive skills, taunt, climbing assist, block-based play.
- Warrior: raw damage, huge committed swings, no shield, high risk/reward.
For Norgan, Fighter is the safer pick. For red-glow Lost Rites packs where a Warrior’s burst ends a fight faster than a Fighter’s block, Warrior can be the better call. Neither is universally correct. See vocation ranks for the current tier context.
First-day checklist for Fighter in Dark Arisen
- Enter Norgan around level 40.
- Equip cold-resistant armor before the first Giant encounter.
- Confirm six skill slots are active in the vocation menu.
- Set Shield Sage, Shield Bash, and at least one damage skill.
- Bring a Mage or Magick Archer pawn with ice resist.
- Farm relics at Jiera for gear that survives freeze (see Relics).
- Place a Portcrystal at the Norgandian Settlement before you go deep.
Fighter in Dark Arisen is the class that stands in front of the Norgan Giant and does not move. That is a useful thing to be.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers before the October 9, 2026 launch.
Is Fighter a new vocation in Dark Arisen?
Fighter is a starter vocation from the 2024 base game. Dark Arisen adds six skill slots and new vocation-specific weapon skills, but no new vocation class.
How do I survive the Norgan Giant's freeze breath?
Cold-resistant armor reduces freeze exposure. A Mage or Magick Archer pawn with ice resist prevents the wipe condition. Do not climb while frozen — break the freeze first with a pawn or curative.
What is the best Fighter weapon?
Dragon's Aegis (186 Strength) is the best shield from the Dragonforged. Dragon's Dogma (351 Strength) is the best greatsword. Both require Wyrmslife Crystals.
Should I use a Fighter pawn or hire a damage dealer?
Both. A Fighter pawn holds enemy attention and climbs large targets. Your Arisen Fighter handles positioning; a Sorcerer or Magick Archer pawn handles the heavy damage output.
How many skill slots does Fighter have in Title Update 3.2?
Six, like every vocation. The update raised the cap from four to six. Shield Sage, Shield Bash, and a damage skill are the non-negotiable three; the remaining three are your choice.
Can Fighter use relic weapons from Norgan?
Yes. Any Arisen can equip relic weapons appraised by Jiera. Fighter benefits from relic swords and shields that roll cold resist or physical defence bonuses on top of their base stats.
